This past weekend in the Casa de Campo resort was a bit more active than usual, all thanks to the Fundación MIR Family Weekend, which brought together more than 300 people among them Casa de Campo villa owners, residents and visitors, who enjoyed a circuit of activities which started at La Romana Country Club with the children’s tennis clinic followed by the traditional golf tournament and finishing up with an elegant dinner-dance party at Minitas Beach.

Despite some untimely rain, the dinner, dance and party opened at Minitas Beach where guests were welcomed – in english! – by the MIR students. This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to see who is being benefitted by their contributions. Something we also suggest to do is giving the school a visit, if you haven’t done so, that you can see first hand everything that the children do and learn in the various facilities.

The event began with a cocktail hour around the new Coco Mar bar with music by DJ Eduardo Louder and the very popular “Mystery Wall.” Guests enjoyed champagne, as well as Chivas 18, and Ron Atlantico mojitos – the perfect way to get the celebration started! After a while the hostess, Pamela Sued invited everyone to take their seats. The ceremony began with a video showing us the reason why we were all there, and Mrs. Lian Fanjul de Azqueta, her daughter Lyanne, and a group of students took the stage to thank everyone for their support in helping the Fundación MIR provide the youth of La Romana with education and the opportunity for a better life.

For every single one of the many attendees of the event, it was a pleasure to know that by taking part we were making a difference in the life of a child, giving the greatest gift of all- knowledge & education -the means to making a better life.

As most might already know, MIR (Mission International Rescue) Charities is a non-profit organization that works to supply the Dominican Republic’s most marginalized people with a variety of life-altering services. Since 1990, they have served the women, youth and children of La Romana and the Eastern region of the Dominican Republic by partnering with and providing funding for social programs. With the help of benefactors and individual contributions, the programs provide a home, medical assistance, education and technical preparation for the people that are most in need in our community. The Fundación MIR runs 3 schools in La Romana; the MIR Esperanza (boys vocational school), the Escuela Técnica Vocacional Fundación MIR (girls vocational school) and the Primaría MIR (infants school), with a total of more than 1500 students.

During the night there was also a special presentation by Puerto Rican artist Christian Daniel who talked about his visit to the MIR schools and how he has always felt a special connection with Casa thanks to his father. He performed “Ahora que te vas” along with the MIR student Feliz Cruz Santana and the student choir, delighting everyone with their presentation that evening. Winners of the golf and tennis tournaments were awarded their much-deserved trophies and gifts just before the dancing commenced.

And as soon as the last bite of dinner (deliciously catered by Casa de Campo) was finished, the stage become a concert set with the appearance of Orquesta Dekadas. And as the first notes of merengue floated through the air, everybody flooded to the dance floor accompanied by MIR students who carried glowing sea creatures giving the night a “carnavalesque” feel. It was a marvellous night! Congratulations to the Fundación MIR for once again organizing a wonderful event, which we are sure was very successful in helping sustain the three Fundación MIR schools and their future projects!
